I have to apologize for my long silence. Between spending the weekend away at a college reunion, and battling off sickness for the rest of the week, I haven’t done much interesting cooking. I’m also going shopping sometime this weekend to restock my kitchen, so more kitchen fun should commence soon.
On the brighter side, summer has made a sudden and dramatic appearance here, complete with hot weather and scattered violent thunderstorms. I woke up this morning to a very warm apartment, and enough rain to discourage me from going outside. (Not to mention enough thunder to terrify my cats!) I wanted something cold and tasty. Smoothies!
This was the first smoothie-appropriate day this year. A couple bags of mixed frozen fruit in the freezer meant that that we were well-stocked — that’s the nice thing about smoothies, that you can keep all the ingredients on hand even if you don’t make them often. What I need to do is freeze some bananas for next time. I also need yogurt, which is my preferred base, though my smoothie this morning was delicious with orange juice instead. Now that summer is here, I hope to develop a smoothie-making habit; like so many things, they are very expensive to buy, but dirt-cheap and easy to make. (Though I remember Oberlin’s DeCafe smoothies with great nostalgia, I’ll stick with making my own now.)
To make a smoothie:
- About two parts frozen fruit, two parts liquid (juice or yogurt, usually), and one part ice if your blender can handle it
- Combine all ingredients in blender, blend on low until smooth.
- Pour, drink, enjoy!
Hooray for cold, fruity goodness!
